Shakespeare's Birthplace

Possibly the most famous and most visited literary landmark in Britain. This is the house where it is thought that Shakespeare was born and spent his formative years.

The house is approached via the Visitors' Centre which holds a comprehensive exhibition about Shakespeare's life. The Birthplace is then reached via the charming and meticulously tended gardens, which contains many trees, flowers and herbs mentioned in Shakespeare's works.

Anne Hathaway's Cottage

Anne Hathaway's Cottage

The world famous Anne Hathaway's Cottage is situated in Shottery 1 mile from Stratford-upon-Avon and was the childhood home of Shakespeare's wife and has been a pilgrimage for visitors for centuries. The young Shakespeare would have courted Anne here and the site has often been described as the most romantic view in England.

Hall's Croft

Hall's Croft

This intriguing house is situated in the Old Town area of Stratford, a few footsteps away from Shakespeare's burial place at Holy Trinity Church. This house was home to Shakespeare's daughter Susanna who in 1607 married a highly-respected local physician, Doctor John Hall (after whom the house is named). The Tudor building is of remarkable interest apart from its Shakespearian connections. The oldest part of the house dates from the early part of the 16th century.

Mary Arden's House & The Shakespeare Countryside Museum

3 miles from the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon is the village of Wilmcote and Mary Arden's House is the childhood home of Shakespeare's mother. Take a tour of the house and neighbouring Palmer's farm and experience 500 years of rural life and farming history. The outbuildings display the Trust's Shakespeare Countryside Museum collections including exhibits illustrating some of the principal farming tasks undertaken in a pre-mechanised age.

William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway are buried here. This ancient church provides a moment of calm away from the bustle of the town. Both the courtyard and the churchyard itself are breathtakingly beautiful.

Hundreds of Teddy Bears from all across the world can be seen in their original Elizabethan setting. Some of these bears are the oldest, most valuable and most unusual that you will find anywhere.

The Theatres

The Theatres

Working for The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) are the finest actors and directors, working on great plays in some of the best theatre spaces in the world.

The RSC in Stratford offers three theatres providing an elaborate range of drama, ancient and modern, classic and contemporary. The largest, the world famous Royal Shakespeare Theatre ("The Royal"), was built in 1932 and offers the largest performance space. The Swan is a wonderfully atmospheric galleried theatre, built to recreate the atmosphere of an Elizabethan playhouse. The Other Place is a modern, exciting and intimate theatre.
