The Slaughters

Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter are two delightful villages close to Bourton-on-the-Water. Despite the unappealing name (Slaughter comes from the Old English word for a wet, muddy place ‘slough’ or ‘slothre’) these 2 villages are famously picturesque and are well worth a trip. They are joined by the river Eye which meanders through.

Lower Slaughter

Lower Slaughter is just off the Roman Fosse Way and a wonderfully conserved typical Cotswold village, with a Water Mill and ducks on the stream. At the western edge is an old Victorian flour mill which now houses a tea and gift shop.

Upper Slaughter

The less famous of the two, Upper Slaughter consists of typical Cotswold stone houses and farms. Walk from the Church up the lane and then down to the Ford where people often stop to paddle. By the Church is now a grand hotel, Lords of the Manor, where you can stay and feel like just that!
