Stow-on-the-Wold, a small, but popular market town standing high up on the Cotswold Hills at a junction of historically important roads including the Roman Fosse Way. Famous as a centre for antiques, Stow-on-the-Wold has been populated since the iron-age, making itself a hub during the height of the Cotswold Wool industry. In the centre of the town is the large Square, surrounded by houses, shops and inns all built in the local Cotswold stone, it gives the feeling of having been the focus of town life over many centuries. At nearly 800ft, Stow-on-the-Wold is the highest of the Cotswold towns, approached uphill from all directions. At one end of the square stands the ancient cross, and at the other the town stocks, shaded by an old elm tree. All around the square visitors can wander among many traditional Cotswold town houses. Stow is a great excuse to explore the many fine antique shops, art galleries, Gift and Craft shops. It is also a convenient base from which to walk the Cotswold countryside.
