Cheltenham

A town to rival Bath, mineral springs were discovered in Cheltenham in 1716. Since then it has been a health and holiday spa where people come to take the medicinal waters. In 1788 King George III visited to drink the waters and with that began Cheltenham's rise as a fashionable holiday resort. Cheltenham is famous for its Regency architecture, and tree lined streets shield classical terraces and villa styled buildings.

With the arrival of George III, also came the sport of kings. Cheltenham is now a hub for horse racing. The Cheltenham Gold Cup, held since 1924, is the most prestigious National Hunt race on the calendar and takes place every March.

Festivals are popular. Music, jazz, folk, literary and science festivals are held each year in the town.

Shoppers are spoilt for choice in
Cheltenham with arcades and several department stores. Stroll along the Promenade from the High Street and you can enjoy the best of the town’s shops and architecture. The Regency style council offices line the right hand side. Carry on past the park and to Montpellier, a beautiful parade of boutique style shops and restaurants.

If night life is what you’re after there is no shortage of pubs, bars and restaurants and many have late licenses.
